Creative Intervention in George Town

leaf graphic

This project took place in November 2024. Its aim was to encourage youth to take pride in the precinct and contribute creatively to the streetscape of the town, minimising vandalism, antisocial behaviours, and damage to Council and public property.

Local and professional artists were engaged in mentoring and delivering quality and diverse forms of art to be put on display, with a mix of temporary and permanent instalments.

Skate Park

Artist: Ben Miller

By engaging with the skatepark youth to understand their vision, Ben crafted a playful theme titled 'Freaky Friendly Animals in a Super Fruit Salad Skate Bowl,' featuring whimsical and lighthearted imagery. The designs reflect the youth's suggestions, including a rainbow gorilla in a top hat, a dragon riding a scooter, and an array of vibrant fruit shapes and quirky animals such as a pineapple, bananas, watermelon, an orange cross-section, an apple with a worm, a seagull wearing a fez, a snake with a feather boa, and a bee sporting a crown.

Location: Regent Square - Anne Street, George Town

Driveway Wall

Artist: Paul Eggins

Recognising the driveway wall as a prominent feature upon entering Macquarie Street, the youth were eager to create an eye-catching statement piece.

In Paul's recognisable style of bright, bold colours, the design is based on the flathead fish commonly found in both George Town, as well as Beechford, where Paul resides. The Art-Street-Art youth selected the final design from four options created by Paul, giving them the opportunity to choose their preferred concept.

LaunchPad

Artist: KreamArt

Inspired by ideas from participants in the Future Impact Group (FIG), the design features a large fig tree installation spreading across the building. At the entrance, a spotted pardalote and the Tasmanian green and gold bell frog welcome visitors.

In the background, silhouettes of seagulls symbolise the youth leadership program Seagulls to Chips.

Location: Anzac Drive, George Town

Rear of Ya Pulingina

Artist: Mansell Fine Arts

Developed in collaboration with Andrew Mansell and local Aboriginal youth, the mural features a black snake that weaves through local Aboriginal stories, reflecting the significance of the river clans and their connection to the sun, stars, and seasonal cycles.

QR codes accompany the artwork, providing access to recordings from local youth sharing the story behind the mural.

Location: Macquarie Street Roundabout, George Town

Dino's Takeaway

Artist: Elev8ed Creations

At the start of 2024, the Art-Street-Art team, alongside local youth, explored the Macquarie Street precinct to identify walls that could be transformed through creative installations.

The resulting mural by Jay Freckelton features a simple yet stunning design, capturing the mesmerising beauty of the Aurora Australis, a phenomenon often visible across the George Town region.

HEAART Ceiling

Artist: Jen Tyers

Inspired by the youth Art-Street-Art team's vision for a bright and uplifting ceiling mural, Jen Tyers created a sky-themed design featuring clouds and shorebirds soaring above.

The mural includes Pacific gulls, an oystercatcher, and a black-faced cuckoo-shrike positioned near the entrance, adding a dynamic and positive touch to the space.

Location: 72 Macquarie Street, George Town

Woolies Alleyway

Artist: Sam Dobransky

This mural celebrates the theme of water in Tasmania through a repetitive abstract art style that evokes calmness and fluidity. Enhanced by a variety of textured effects, the artwork achieves a sense of depth and richness.

The design captures the essence of Tasmania's water landscapes, using layered abstract patterns to depict elements such as ripples, rocks, and vegetation. The textured background mimics the natural surfaces of aquatic environments, while the colour palette, inspired by Tasmanian waters, features soothing blues and earthy tones.

The Olde' Chickenfeed

Artist: Emily-Rose Wills

These works were painted during Youth Week 2024. The intention of their presence is impermanent, and the work is an ode to intuitive painting with the following in mind:

The universe’s mystery lies in infinite scale—each horizon unveils another, from atoms to galaxies, without end. Boundaries open into new, incomprehensible realms, defying closure. Reality unfolds endlessly, suggesting our universe is but one part of an infinite series of interconnected worlds, each contained within the next, rising to an infinity of infinities.

Location: Corner of Macquarie and Bathurst Street, George Town

Tamar Cakes

Artist: Elev8ted Creations with Port Dalrymple School Youth

Recognising the popularity of local business entrances, the youth ArtStreetArt team identified the Bakery as an ideal location for a creative transformation.

Collaborating with professional artist Jay Freckelton, local youth designed and brought to life a mural showcasing the natural beauty of the Kanamaluka region, adding a vibrant and meaningful touch to the space.
