George Town will come alive on Australia Day 2019
Commencing at 8.30am on Saturday 26th January, the celebations will commence with the Civic Reception and Community Breakfast.
We invite the community to join with us as celebrate our great Nation, and give recognition to members of the community through the Australia Day Awards Presentations.
Awards will be presented to
- Citizen of the Year
- Young Citizen of the Year, and
- Event of the Year.
This year, it gives us great pleasure to have the honour of welcoming Australian Citizens who have chosen George Town as they undertake their Citizenship Ceremony – Dr Imram Aslam, Mr Rustam Imran and Ms Areesha Imran.
In attendance also, will be Council’s Australia Day Ambassadors, Jack and Chris Duffy. Jack was born in Launceston in 2006 with Cerebal Palsy Spastic Quadriplegia. He is currently 12 years old and can honestly boast that he has been a part of more adventures than many of us ever will. Jack utilises a wheelchair and is non-verbal but this has not prevented him raising over $200000 for organisations supporting Tasmanians with disabilities.
In his short life Jack has sea kayaked from Launceston to Hobart (Kayak Jack), hiked the Overland Track (Overland Jack) has completed 4 marathons, and most recently formed part of a celebrity team for the George Town Triathlon.
Jack is now the namesake of the not for profit organisation, ‘Just Like Jack’ which allows children and families with disabilities to experience adventures and get the most out of life.
Chris is Jacks Dad and supports Jack along with many others to complete these amazing adventures ensuring that Jacks disabilities don’t prevent him living a life that many of us take for granted.
