George Town Council area has a diverse community. Its 6,636 (As at 2011 Census - issued 28/3/2013) residents live predominantly in the urban areas of George Town and Low Head, the coastal settlements that face onto Bass Strait, and the rural communities around Pipers River and Hillwood.As an important sub-regional centre, George Town offers a wide range of services for residents in the lower reaches of the Tamar Valley and surrounding farming communities.

Residents can take advantage of a choice of urban, rural or seaside lifestyles.

Prime waterfront housing offering panoramic vistas of the Tamar River and access to foreshore recreation areas are in plentiful supply, whilst a range of affordable housing caters for all preferences.

A full range of primary and secondary schooling is supported by transport to Launceston for further studies while a home-based child care centre and playgroups provide for the needs of families with younger children.

A variety of organised sports, both indoor and outdoor are offered, and numerous community groups meet regularly, catering for other social interests.

Full time medical practices and a local division of the Launceston General Hospital, all based in the town, service the area.
