George Town Water Tower

The George Town Water Tower was painted in 1985 and to date, this is the oldest painted water tower that I have discovered since documenting the Australian Silo Art Trail.

1985 makes it 35 years old in 2020. Way to go Tasmania for leading the way in this wonderful new art trend that is now sweeping Australia.

This water tank was directed by Wayne Hutchins from NSW and Diana North from Launceston. They were assisted by Darren Viney and Michelle Johns of George Town. A special mention went to Cathy, Kevin, Jenny and Heath for helping complete the project.

It would not have been possible without the assistance of George Town Council, CEP, Australian Council, TAS arts advisory board , Comalco, TAA, George Town High School, Hec and Gunn Genders Hardware.

Weymouth Tennis Shelter

As part of the COVID-19 Community Care and Recovery Package Grant back in 2020, the Weymouth Progress Association facilitated the installation of artwork on the rear of the tennis court shelter, adjacent to Weymouth Hall. They engaged renowned community artist Fakie Wylde, who created a theme that aligned with community expectations and was inclusive of all cultures and age groups. This initiative aimed to instil a sense of community pride and ownership.

Hillwood Public Toilets and Bus Shelter

In 2022, the Hillwood Progress Association requested the painting of the bus stop and toilet block inspired by the local flora and fauna. The residents sent pictures of birds and a variety of Lily flowers to inspire the artist, Thomas Chandler. The residents voted for the birds, and the finalists were the eagle, swan, fairywren, and the Tasmanian native hen, to
be surrounded by lily flowers and the Tamar River waters. They incorporate the famous strawberries from Hillwood and a cherry. The spotted quoll is the favourite native mammal of the community.

The former Placemaking Committee sponsored these murals as part of the Community Beautification project.

Beechford Water Tank

In 2018, The Beechford Water Tank Art project was commissioned by the Beechford Residents and Property Owners Association to brighten up the community. This mural showcases a kookaburra, a landscape, dolphin and palm trees.

Access to the beach is facilitated through various means, including a small sand track near the now-defunct football oval or by crossing a footbridge over a tidal estuary.
