MEDIA RELEASE - It’s business as usual for George Town Council

20 Mar 2020

Mayor Greg Kieser confirmed today that George Town Council continues to follow the advice of Federal and State authorities regarding measures aimed at restricting the spread of Coronavirus (COVID-19).  “We have reviewed all Council services, our main priorities when it comes to day-to-day operations are the safety of our staff and the community, and the continuity of Council services.”

“We continue to serve and interact with the community, however Council is respectful of the rules of engagement regarding social distancing and therefore encourages any enquiries that can be handled via email or by phone rather than in person is appreciated” he said.

Some of the community may already aware that the Visitor Information Centre and the Watch House have been closed in George Town and our tourism information services have been relocated to the Council office in Anne Street.

“Council is understanding of the impact the crisis is having on local economy and is assisting local business in continuing to operate where possible, including the provision of building and planning services which are continuing business as usual, advised the Mayor.  I would like to encourage the local community to support our local businesses wherever possible to help them through this disruptive time”.

Council has contingencies in place to ensure essential services continue as the situation evolves.  If there are any concerns or questions regarding the Coronavirus COVID-19 Council encourages the community to view the State Health authority’s website as a trusted source of current information involving the current pandemic www.healthdirect.gov.au/coronavirus.
