Australia Day Awards - Young Citizen of the Year 2022

26 Jan 2022

The Australia Day Young Citizen of the Year Award is presented in recognition of outstanding personal achievement and/or the considerable contribution as an individual has made to our community in recent times.

Our Young Citizen of the Year for 2022 is Gabrielle Barnard.

Gabbie (as she is known) is an amazing young lady who has contributed so much to the George Town Community in all she has undertaken.  For the past 2 years Gabbie has been involved with the Tasmania Fire Service.

As a young independent female in a male dominant Tas Fire Service environment, Gabbie has demonstrated a clear goal of supporting the community, participating in all training afforded to her, and importantly is an extremely reliable member of the George Town Fire Brigade. She selflessly responds at all times of the day and night to emergency calls, against a backdrop of 3 part time jobs, all on the back of completing her Nursing Uni degree.
She was born and has grown up in the George Town community and her commitment to the community is way above her years.

Gabbie Barnard is a perfect role model, her demonstrated capacity to join something so diverse with absolutely no experience, is a testament to her attitude and a great example to young people in not only our community but for all young Tasmanians.

The diversity that Gabbie has created by volunteering with the Tas Fire Service, not only in terms of gender and age, is also something so important for young people to embrace, against the backdrop of declining volunteer numbers.
