New Basketball and Netball Infrastructure now completed in the Graham Fairless Centre

 

The George Town Graham Fairless Centre indoor multi-sport facility project has now come to fruition with the completion of indoor basketball/netball infrastructure thanks to the funding received from the Tasmanian State Government under the Improving the Playing Field Grants Program 2020-21.

In line with the Council’s Community Strategic Plan and the Sports and Recreation Strategy, the council has developed an indoor basketball/netball facility at the Graham Fairless Centre to cater to the community’s needs.

When consulting the Community, the question was asked of school children “what activity they would like to do but cannot do currently” the respondent’s top answers were:

1. Indoor basketball/netball facility and
2. Local basketball competitions in George Town.

The installation of indoor basketball rings, electronic scoreboard, score bench, and player/public seating in the facility means that the above-mentioned needs of the community have now come to life. A fully functional state-of-the-art indoor basketball facility has led to the emergence of George Town’s first basketball association, which hosts junior competitions for our community. The infrastructure will also assist the George Town Netball club with indoor training and matches.
