Communication Board - Regent Square

18 Jun 2024

Did you spot this new signage board in Regent Square over the weekend?

This innovative communication tool features Auslan signs and picture visuals, allowing individuals to gesture, point, or scan symbols for effective communication. It's designed for people of all abilities, promoting inclusivity and bridging communication gaps.

The board provides a new avenue for connection, fostering better communication among all children, adults, and carers who visit the playground.
The communication board is a form of augmentative and alternative communication (AAC) that will benefit people of all abilities. It features predictable words aligned with well-recognised symbols, making it intuitive and easy to use. This design ensures that individuals with varying communication needs can effectively express themselves, bridging communication gaps and promoting inclusivity within our community.

This communication board is the first of its kind in Tasmania playgrounds, setting a precedent for accessible communication and inclusion. As part of our Diversity, Equitable Access, and Inclusion Policy, George Town Council is dedicated to ensuring fair and equal access for everyone in our community. The recent installation illustrates our commitment to this policy, enhancing the quality of life and positive experiences for people with disabilities, carers, young people, and adults.
George Town Council invites the community and visitors to visit Regent Square and experience this new communication tool. The Playground Communication Board is a step forward in making our public spaces more inclusive and accessible for everyone.
