Possible Environmental Incident Requiring Further Investigation – Low Head
On 1st February 2017 the George Town Council was contacted by a member of the public who had sighted what appeared to be asbestos on a section of the coast line in Low Head.
Upon inspection by Council’s Environmental Health Officer and a representative of Crown Land Services, a number of pieces of suspected asbestos material were identified close to, and on, the immediate foreshore which is public land. Samples of the material have been collected for the purpose of testing and correct identification. It is thought the material may have been deposited there as part of a land reclamation project.
Crown Land services will be consulting with an environmental specialist in order to develop the most appropriate plan to remediate the site should the material be confirmed to contain asbestos.
In the mean time, it is recommended that members of the community avoid using the site until further testing has occurred and any environmental issues are contained.
