Declaration of a Cat Management Area

DECLARATION OF A CAT MANAGEMENT AREA

In accordance with section 21A of the Cat Management Act 2009 (the Act), Council hereby notifies the public of the declaration under Section 20 of the Act declaring an area of land within the George Town municipality to be a cat management area.

The area of land that is proposed to be declared a cat management area is namely the George Town Council Depot (14-24 Franklin Street, George Town) bordered by Franklin Street and Thompson Avenue.

A cat trapping program will be undertaken by George Town Council Community Compliance Officers and/or contractors of the George Town Council. Stainless steel drop style cat traps will be used to trap cats.

  • Traps will be checked at least once in every 24-hour period in accordance with the Act.
  • Trapping within the declared Cat Management Area may occur at any time during the declared time period.
  • Trapped cats will be transferred by George Town Council Compliance Officers and/or contractors of the George Town Council to a Cat Management Facility for assessment.
  • Any cat found to be deemed domestic by a qualified veterinarian, or implanted with a microchip, will either be returned to its owner or will remain at the Cat Management Facility for the purpose of re-homing.
  • Cats determined to be feral will be humanely destroyed by a qualified veterinarian, within or approved by the Cat Management Facility.

There will be no restriction on traffic movement in the declared area.

George Town Council Community Compliance Officers, contractors of George Town Council, and Just Cats will be responsible for the undertaking of this program.

This declaration will take effect on 10th September 2025 and will remain in force until 30th June 2028.
