Caring for Cats Program

Free Cat Desexing and Microchipping Pilot Program for residents of the George Town Municipality.

George Town Council is pleased to announce the commencement of our “Caring for Cats Program” a Free Cat Desexing and Microchipping Pilot Program for residents of the George Town Municipality. It is a requirement under the Tasmanian Government Cat Management Act 2009 that owners must ensure that their cats, over the age of 4 months are de-sexed and microchipped.

Residents throughout the municipality can access this free service by registering below or in person at our offices at 16-18 Anne Street or by calling our offices on 6382 8800.

Who’s Eligible?

  • Residents George Town Municipality are eligible for as long as the program runs in the 2024/2025. The program will extend until this years allocated funds are expended so please register your interest early.

Why This Program?

  • As is the case with other municipalities, George Town Local Government area has high rate of cats that by law must be desexed. Additionally cats over the age of 4 months must be microchipped so that if lost or injured the cat can be returned safely to its owner. This program offers free desexing and microchipping and is designed to assist families with cost-of-living pressures and importantly ensuring better welfare for cats and preventing unwanted litters.

If my cat is microchipped, do I have to pay an annual registration fee?

  • No definitely not. The microchip will simply assist us to return your cat to you if it becomes lost or is injured. Tasmanian Government legislation does not require payment of a cat registration fee.
