Join us at the Watch House Gallery for the opening of a new exhibition by Hobart-based artist Suemi Chiba.
Opening Event: Saturday, 9 May 2026 at 11:00am
Watch House Gallery, Macquarie Street, George Town
The exhibition opens with an opportunity to hear from Suemi about her practice, materials, and the ideas shaping this body of work.
Working with wheel thrown ceramics, Suemi explores form, surface, and material through layered glazes and gathered elements. Her practice reflects a deep connection to place, drawing on natural forms, particularly rocks and geological structures, and the quiet ways they orient us in the world.
Through her work, Suemi considers how materials carry stories, from the minerals and plant matter within glazes to the histories embedded in ceramic techniques passed between makers over time. Each piece holds connections across cultures, landscapes, and traditions.
This exhibition invites you to reflect on your own relationship to place, memory, and belonging, and the ways objects can hold and carry those connections.
Presented as part of the Creative George Town program, bringing contemporary art from across Tasmania to the region and supporting meaningful connections between artists, audiences, and place.
This exhibition runs until Sunday, 21 June 2026.
