Local Government Elections

Local Government elections are held every four years to determine the representatives for George Town Council.

Elections, conducted by postal ballot, will be held in October 2026 to fill councillor, mayor and deputy mayor positions.

Voting is compulsory.

This October, elections will be held for councillor, mayor and deputy mayor positions across all 29 councils in Tasmania.

Local government plays a vital role in shaping our communities, from roads and infrastructure to services, planning and community wellbeing.

The upcoming elections are an important opportunity for Tasmanians to have their say on who represents them. If you are considering nominating, now is the time to learn more about the process and how you can best represent your community. The Local Government Association of Tasmania (LGAT) has prepared a Candidate Handbook outlining the nomination process, including eligibility and campaigning.

Candidate nominations will open on 7 September and close on 21 September 2026.

Candidate Information Session will be held in August; details coming soon.
