On Sunday, the 26th of January 2025, we celebrated Australia Day with a Civic Ceremony. George Town Council welcomed one new citizen and presented the George Town Council Australia Day awards.

The George Town Australia Day Citizen of the Year, Young Citizen of the Year, and Community Event of the Year awards were proudly presented to outstanding individuals and groups who have made remarkable contributions to our community. The winners were Dr Tim Mooney, who was awarded Citizen of the Year, George Town New Year's Eve Extravaganza for Community Event of the Year and Audrina Smit-Larson, who was awarded Young Citizen of the Year. We would also like to acknowledge and celebrate the nominees whose efforts, dedication, and unwavering commitment to making George Town a better place for all.

We were privileged to have John Zeckendorf as our 2025 Australia Day Ambassador, who delivered an inspiring speech. John is an Australian adventurer and businessman; John is the first Tasmanian to summit Mount Everest and complete the “7 Summits,” climbing the highest peak on each continent.

The Australia Day celebrations continued with a successful family pool party at the George Town Swimming Pool. Around 400 people took advantage of the beautiful weather to join in pool games, photos, laser tag, live music, lunch and ice creams. Plus, a “real-life” mermaid made an appearance.

On behalf of our community, we welcome our newest citizen. We would also like to congratulate our amazing George Town Council Australia Day Award winners and nominees for their outstanding contributions to our community.

We thank everyone who attended our Australia Day events, including our volunteers from the Rotary Club of George Town, Country Women’s Association, Soroptimist International of George Town and Alidia Lovett, our fantastic Australian Anthem singer, as we reflect, respect and celebrate together – because we’re all part of the Story.
