Earth and Sky: Ritual for the Free by Joanna Pinkiewicz

Earth and Sky: Ritual for the Free by Joanna Pinkiewicz

Saturday 17 January 2026 | 11:00am
Watch House Gallery, Macquarie Street, George Town

The exhibition opens with an artist talk, offering audiences the opportunity to connect directly with the ideas behind the work. The Creative George Town program aims to bring contemporary art into a regional setting and make it visible, accessible, and welcoming.

This installation engages directly with the site (the Watch House) and its layered historical narrative, unfolding the story of place and people. The works span from a floor installation created in situ to works on paper, tracing themes of grief, isolation, and the longing for freedom. At its core lies ritual—a transformative act that channels grief into offering. By acknowledging human suffering and lifting emotion toward the sky, the work seeks release, opening a space for healing and transcendence.

Here, the notion that experiences and emotions remain bound to the past is unsettled. The artist’s emotional and physiological responses to the site are brought forward, witnessed, and ultimately released, allowing history to breathe within contemporary consciousness.

Exhibition: 19 January - 1 March 2026
