We’re giving the Jim Mooney Gallery a full refresh to make it more secure, comfortable, and versatile for exhibitions, workshops, and community events.
Upgrades include:
- Removing the outdated retractable walls to make the space safer and more adaptable
- Adding a new gallery wall (opposite the Graham Fairless Centre) to increase art display capacity
- Installing a front wall (opposite Tamar FM) with windows and a lockable glass door, keeping the gallery visible and secure even when unattended
- Installing heating for year-round comfort
- Replacing carpet with easy-to-clean vinyl flooring
- Making the gallery fully lockable and temperature-controlled to help meet desired humidity levels for exhibitions
These changes will allow us to host more touring shows, encourage community use during programming gaps, and further professionalise and modernise the space.
The upgrades also align with the George Town Council Strategic Plan goals to strengthen community life, enhance cultural facilities, and increase participation in the arts. This renovation is a budget highlight in our 2025/2026 Annual Plan.
Stay tuned for more updates.
Please note the quilt display will be unaffected and is not part of these changes.
