Welcome to March!
As March unfolds, I extend a warm and heartfelt welcome to all our residents. With the changing seasons, we take a moment to reflect on the incredible events, achievements, and progress that continue to shape our vibrant community.
On Australia Day, we welcomed one new citizen to our community. We gathered to recognise outstanding individuals and events, by celebrating the achievements of Dr Tim Mooney, George Town New Year’s Eve Extravaganza and Audrina Smit-Larson, who received well-deserved Australia Day awards. We were honoured to have John Zeckendorf as our 2025 Australia Day Ambassador.
Our gratitude goes out to the Rotary Club of George Town for providing a delicious breakfast and to the Country Women’s Association and Soroptimist International for their thoughtful Citizenship gifts. A heartfelt thank you also to Alidia Lovett for her incredible performance of the Australian Anthem.
Following the official ceremony, over 300 community members enjoyed an afternoon of fun at the George Town Swimming Pool, with laser tag, pool games, live music, and plenty of ice cream. A big shout-out to our dedicated lifeguards for ensuring a safe and enjoyable event for all!
Our municipality continues to see significant improvements in local infrastructure:
• Road Upgrades – Several roads have undergone resealing work, improving safety and longevity.
• Old Aerodrome Road Construction – Stage 2 of the project is well underway, this phase covers a 1.5km stretch from the southern end of Stage 1 towards the North St junction. This phase is expected to be completed by April 2025.
• Fairway Ave Repairs, Lulworth – Following the severe flooding late last year, extensive repairs have been carried out to restore the road and culverts, ensuring safe travel once again.
• Agnes Street - 240 metres between Parish Crescent and Dunning Avenue is now completed.
In March and April, we will conduct a Community Satisfaction Survey, which will give the municipality the opportunity to share their satisfaction and what matters most to residents within the George Town municipality.
We are making great progress on the new Aquatic Health and Wellbeing Centre! To keep the community informed, we will be hosting information sessions in March. I encourage all residents to attend, learn more, view the plans and ask questions.
In addition, our Council Roadshows will be taking place in the coming months, allowing councillors and the team to connect directly with residents across the municipality. Stay tuned for details!
There’s plenty to look forward to in the coming months, including:
• George Town Youth Week – A celebration of young people in our community.
• Solstice in the Square – An exciting mid-year community gathering.
• Kinimathatakinta / George Town Art Prize 2025 – Showcasing local creativity and talent.
• Healthy George Town – the 2025 Autumn/Winter Program has commenced. See the Healthy George Town webpage for the free activities.
As always, I am proud to lead such a dynamic and engaged community. Your involvement, dedication, and passion make George Town a truly special place to call home.
Wishing you all a happy and safe Easter break!
