MEDIA RELEASE– Designs released for the George Town Aquatic, Health and Wellbeing Centre
The George Town Council has released designs for the new Aquatic Health and Wellbeing Centre ahead of the proposal being lodged for development approval.
George Town Mayor Greg Kieser said the designs were being released ahead of the official planning lodgement to give the public extra time to see what Council intended for the development.
“This facility will provide swimming and associated health services to our community for the next 40 years. We want the community to be as proud of this centre as it has been of the current pool facility,” he said.
Cr Kieser said the plans would be officially lodged for development approval next week and advertised for an extended period to allow the community ample time to view the design.
If approved, the indoor facility will be constructed with a $15 million Federal Government grant along with a further $2.5 million from the State Government.
“This centre will not only provide our community with all the benefits of year-round swimming access with a 25m pool and a warm water program pool, but also a gymnasium, fitness rooms and café facilities,” Cr Kieser said.
“The 25m pool will be able to be configured in multiple ways to support lap swimming as well as casual pool play, along with swimming carnival competition.
“Importantly, the new centre will also provide infrastructure for allied health services to help assist people with exercise and therapy. “The new centre, which was identified as a priority in Council’s Sport and Recreation Strategy, will represent a significant upgrade on the current swimming pool which has served the community exceptionally well for the past 40-plus years.
“Council is planning to add outdoor facilities to the centre in a future stage of development and are already in discussions about how that might be funded, recognising that many people in our community do enjoy access to safe outdoor recreation areas in the warmer months.
“The concepts and plans the architects have produced provide an exciting insight into how the facility will look and function, and I urge people to visit Council’s website for more images and a virtual walk-through as well as more information and frequently asked questions.
“I am confident the new centre will continue to provide an extremely positive experience for our entire community and offer even more opportunities for a wider cross-section of users to enjoy aquatic and other types of recreation, year-round,” he said.
The new centre is scheduled to be operating by October 2026.
