2025 Kinimathatakinta/George Town Art Prize

The Kinimathatakinta/George Town Art Prize is an annual event hosted at the Jim Mooney Gallery and managed by the George Town Council. The prize invites artists to submit two or three-dimensional artworks that capture and reflect the unique character of the region.

Artists must have either resided, worked, or owned property in the Kinimathatakinta/George Town municipality for at least one year prior to December 2024 to qualify. Alternatively, artists who can demonstrate a substantial connection to the area through their artwork and accompanying artist statement are also eligible to enter.

The goal of this prize is to highlight and celebrate the robust and evolving art scene within the municipality. It encourages artists to deeply engage with their environment, encouraging a richer appreciation and understanding of place and community. The prize showcases artworks that resonate with the essence of Kinimathatakinta/George Town, highlighting its landscapes, waterways, coastline, townships, and the distinctive lifestyles of its inhabitants.

By promoting an intimate engagement with our surroundings, the prize aims to enhance a broader understanding and appreciation of the region. It encourages the creation of artworks that depict and interpret our culture, challenges, and beauty. This platform is dedicated to celebrating the creativity and innovation of artists, introducing new perspectives and voices that enrich the local cultural dialogue.

This title of this prize is in palawa kani, the language of Tasmanian Aborigines.

Finalists will be chosen by a judging panel based on the information provided in the application form, including the artwork image, title, dimensions, and medium. The judging panel will assess each entry based on various criteria such as originality, artistic skill, relevance to the theme, and overall impact. This is the same process that many art prizes both in Australia and overseas undertake. It's important to note that not every submission will be accepted as a finalist. Art competitions often receive a large number of entries, and only a select few can be chosen for recognition.

The winners will be chosen by the judging panel once the physical works have been hung in the gallery.

No, you cannot enter a specific award. All works will be judged against all awards that are relevant to the piece. The Kanamaluka Photographic Award will only be judged against photographic submissions.

If you are selected as a finalist, we will send you an email to advise of drop off and pick up dates for your artwork.

After the overwhelmingly positive feedback and enthusiasm we’ve seen from our young creatives throughout 2024, we are thrilled to announce a 2025 Youth Art Prize. Applications for the Youth Art Prize will open in April 2025, after the adult prize has been exhibited.
