Clearing of Fire Hazards

At this time every year, George Town Council reminds owners and occupiers of properties of the need to reduce fire hazards on their land.

Properties Less than 2000sqm
Hazard reduction works involves clearing and removal of all grasses, scrub and undergrowth, so that it is no higher than 150mm. Also remove any buildup of vegetation along the boundary line/fences.

Properties Over 2000sqm
A firebreak of a minimum of ten (10) metres in width is required around the property boundaries. This does not require or include the removal of trees, and care should be taken to preserve them.  Please note that these are the minimum requirements and extra work may be needed after inspection to reduce any fire hazard.

Piling up of cleared vegetation is not permitted. Any piles of accumulated vegetation need to be removed from site. Blocks 2000sqm or less are not permitted to conduct any burning. For residents with blocks over 2000sqm please contact TasFire to discuss on site burn requirements.

Council wishes to stress the importance of undertaking this work prior to the upcoming Tasmanian fire season. Neglecting this issue could cause serious damage to your property and those of your neighbours, and could pose a serious risk to the community.

Should you require any further information on this matter, please do not hesitate to contact our Community Compliance Officers at the Council Office on 6382 8800.
