Summer Heat

Remember to stay cool to enjoy summer safely.

Hotter temperatures increase the risk of heat-related illness.

You are higher risk if you are over 65, pregnant, work outside or have a chronic medical condition. Babies and young children are also at risk. Simple steps to keep yourself and others safe in the heat.

  • Plan your day to avoid strenuous activities and being outdoors, especially during the hottest part of the day.
  • Stay out of the sun as much as possible. If you need to go outside, wear light coloured, long, loose-fitting clothing, a hat, sunscreen, and seek shade.
  • Use fans or air-conditioners and close blinds and curtains to keep the heat out.
  • Drink plenty of water even if you’re not thirsty.
  • Never leave children or pets in cars.
  • Keep windows and doors shut if it’s hotter outside than inside and reopen them when it cools down.

Remember to check on family, friends and neighbours, especially if they’re at higher risk of being affected by heat.

Seek medical advice if needed - contact your GP or call healthdirect on 1800 022 222.

In an emergency call 000 for help – heat-related illness can be life threatening.
