2025 Kinimathatakinta/George Town Youth Art Prize

Are you a young artist ready to showcase your talent? The Kinimathatakinta Youth Art Prize is your opportunity to share your creativity, ideas, and artistic vision with the community. Open to artists aged up to the age of 25, this prize celebrates the powerful voices of young people and offers a professional platform for emerging talent in Kinimathatakinta/George Town.

About the Prize

The Youth Art Prize encourages young artists to submit works that express their unique perspectives. Whether you’re into painting, photography, sculpture, or digital art, this is your chance to make your mark and inspire others. Hosted during the Winter Solstice, the exhibition is a celebration of creative voices in our region, bringing together art, community, and recognition.

 

 

Award Categories

Thanks to the support of Bell Bay Aluminium and Timberlink, we’re proud to offer prizes across four age categories:

0–6 years: Early Childhood

Sponsored by Bell Bay Aluminium, this award encourages the youngest participants to explore creativity through playful and exploratory art.
Prize Money: $250

7–12 years: Primary School Age

Sponsored by Bell Bay Aluminium, this award focuses on school-age children expressing their growing skills and creativity.
Prize Money: $250

13–17 years: Teenage/High School Age

Sponsored by Bell Bay Aluminium, this award provides an outlet for adolescents to showcase their developing artistic talents and unique perspectives.
Prize Money: $250

18–25 years: Emerging Adults/Young Adults

Sponsored by Timberlink, this highlights emerging talent and offers a platform for young adults to build confidence and begin professional creative endeavours.
Prize Money: $500

Entries open on April 7, 2025. Submit your work for a chance to be featured in a professional exhibition and win one of our age-category prizes. All entries will be reviewed by a panel of local artists and arts professionals who are passionate about young talent.

Entries

  • Each artist may submit only one individual artwork.
  • Artists are required to include a high-resolution publication ready image of their artwork (preferably @300dpi, maximum 5MB size JPEG file) alongside their application.
  • By entering, artists grant George Town Council the right to reproduce their artwork in print and electronic media for publicity and educational purposes. Artists will be credited appropriately.

Eligibility

  • To enter, artists must be aged 25 or under and live, work, or study within the George Town Municipality.

  • All artworks entered must be original works executed by the artist whose name appears on the entry form.
  • Artworks must have been completed after December 2023.
  • Moving or projected digital media works are not eligible.
  • Works are to be no larger than 200 cm in any direction or must not exceed 100cm cubed.

Exhibition

  • Artworks must be delivered to the Jim Mooney Gallery by Friday, 13 June 2025
  • Artworks must be collected by the end of July 2025
  • Art works will not be for sale during the prize but may be for future prizes. If potential purchases express interest in purchasing your work, the George Town will put them in touch with the artist directly.
  • Selected artworks must be available to remain on display throughout the dates of the exhibition.
  • All expenses related to submission, transportation to and from the gallery, and transit insurance, if selected for exhibition, are the responsibility of the artist.
  • All artworks must be clearly labelled and must include their name, the title of the work, medium and the size or dimensions on the back of the artwork.
  • The George Town Council and the assessment committee retain the authority to reject works for exhibition if they are considered unsuitable, unstable, dangerous, offensive, or indicative of cultural appropriation, or if they do not adhere to the entry conditions. All decisions made by the judges are final, and no further discussion or correspondence will be entertained.
  • The George Town Council will provide insurance for artworks during the installation, exhibition and de-install.

This title of this prize is in palawa kani, the language of Tasmanian Aborigines.

George Town Council acknowledges Palawa/Tasmanian Aboriginal people, the Tasmanian Aboriginal community as the original owners of Lutruwita/Tasmania. We honour and give thanks for the caring of country, seas and skies of Kinimathatakinta/George Town and surrounds. We pay respect to the elders past and present for they hold the memories, traditions, culture and hope of Palawa people in Lutruwita/Tasmania
