Healthy Active by Design Workshop

The Heart Foundation and University of Canberra’s Health Research Institute (UC HRI) are working together on an exciting project to support walkability and active living in socio-economically disadvantaged communities.

George Town is one of three communities across Australia we’re working closely on this project (the other two are in Fairfield, NSW and Mirrabooka, WA). The project aim is to support local councils and communities and to develop evidence-based online resources as part of the Heart Foundation’s Healthy Active by Design toolkit.

Research demonstrates that people living in socioeconomically disadvantaged neighbourhoods are significantly less likely to meet physical activity guidelines and more likely to be sedentary than more advantaged individuals. Physical inactivity and sedentary lifestyles can impact a person’s health and wellbeing, leading to greater risk of developing chronic diseases such as cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes.

The Heart Foundation want to hear from you about opportunities to make George Town more walkable.

The project team, consisting of two staff from UC HRI and the Heart Foundation, will be facilitating a community workshop at The Launch Pad on Saturday 4 May from 9:30am – 12:00pm.

We would love for you to join us, and to please invite others in your network to come along.

As a small token of our appreciation, all participants will receive a $20 gift card.

Registration is required to attend the workshop and is available via this link
