Volunteering within your community provides opportunities to be part of a team and helps you to make new friends. You can choose to volunteer for different reasons, too.

Many choose to volunteer for the opportunity to give something back to the community or make a difference to the people around them. For others, it provides an opportunity to develop new skills or build on existing experience and knowledge.

Regardless of the motivation, what unites volunteers is that they find it both challenging and rewarding.

Volunteer of the Year Awards 2021

Do you know someone who gives their time to make our community a better place?

Perhaps they run the canteen or coach at your sports club, operate community transport, offer their skills to tutor others, care for the environment, assist with emergency services, or assist in the day to day operations of a charity or organisation: whether that’s tourism, heritage, and the arts; administration; maintenance; or community services.

Recognise these people by nominating them for a Volunteer Recognition Award and let us acknowledge and celebrate their contributions to our community!

Further information and nomination forms are available here:

George Town Council celebrates the valued volunteers in our community during National Volunteer Week, held in May each year. For a nominee to be recognised at the 2021 National Volunteer Recognition Awards, the nomination must be received no later than Thursday 8th of April. Late nominations cannot be accepted.

National Volunteer Week

National Volunteer Week (NVW) is Australia’s largest annual celebration of volunteers. This year, we will celebrate our Volunteers from Monday 17th to Sunday 23rd May 2021.

The theme for this year is Recognise. Reconnect. Reimagine.

  • RECOGNISE celebrate and thank volunteers for the vital role they play in our lives.
  • RECONNECT to what is important by giving our time to help others and ourselves.
  • REIMAGINE how we better support volunteers and the communities they help.
